Why I wrote it

At 3:00 a.m. in Heinersreuth, Germany, my phone rang. My thirteen-year-old son Atticus had been struck by an SUV an ocean away, and was fighting for his life. What followed were eleven days at a hospital bedside in Virginia, watching a machine breathe for him and learning to read monitors like constellations.

On day twelve he woke up. Six months later he was riding bikes again, obsessed with golf, arguing with me about screen time. He came all the way back.

I’m the one who didn’t return to normal.

Because somewhere in those eleven days I noticed something I couldn’t un-notice. My older children and I responded to the same catastrophe from two very different places. Where I burned for accountability, they reached for calm and measured caution. Neither reaction was wrong. But the distance between them stunned me, and I couldn’t explain it.

I did not set out to write a book. I set out to understand a gap I hadn’t known was there. And the more I looked, the more the gap seemed to have been taught.

What Atti X means

Atti X is named for my son. It is also the name of the thing this book is a blueprint for: a transparency engine. Infrastructure built by the Many and aimed at the Few. Not to regulate them. Not to beg them. To watch them the way they have been watching us.

Every algorithm exposed. Every decision documented. Every fingerprint visible.

Critically, it is not a truth machine. Truth requires an arbiter, and an arbiter concentrates exactly the power this book objects to. Atti X does not say this company is lying. It says: here is what they stated publicly, here is what their behaviour shows, and here is the gap between the two. The reader draws the conclusion.
